Two young Romanians Gheorghe and Ion played by Christian
Schmitt and Erik de Kruijf are hunted by the Police in Amsterdam
and tormented by their own homosexual feelings. In a series of encounters
they discover their shared desires and re-enact the power relationships
that have subjugated them.
A hard-hitting but inspiring love story, Romophobia is
an intense, at times erotic play that does not show its protagonists
as victims but as confused young men who leave a Romania that persecutes
and ignores them to find a better life here. The irony is that our
society equally persecutes them as criminals. Hypocrisy of this
kind neither understands the love of male prostitutes nor does it
comprehend the complexities of why these young men should look for
an identity in a lifestyle that is held in such contempt. This is
not a play for those with comfortable values.
The performances are in English.
